Bermuda Bowl For Paris

THE Maitland Bridge Congress will be held on October 28, not on October 21 as listed in some calendars of bridge congresses.

It is a one-day teams event starting at 9.30am in the Senior Citizens Hall, Grant St, Maitland.

Eileen Humphrey (4930-1264) or Rosemary Pout (4966-5376, 0419 747 101) can be contacted to take entries.

An important and pleasing announcement has been made by the president of the World Bridge Federation, Jose Damiani.

The World Championships (the Bermuda Bowl) and other important championships were to be held in Bali this year. Unfortunately, due to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, it was not possible to hold the championships there.

However, Damiani has announced that another venue for the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup, Senior Bowl and World Transnational Open teams has been found, at the French Bridge Federation building in Paris on very nearly the same dates as those originally scheduled.

Play will begin on October 21 or 22 and be completed by November 3.

The details have yet to be determined but Australia has accepted an invitation from the European Bridge Union (EBU) to send a representative bridge team to the inaugural event to be held in conjunction with the Commonwealth Games in Manchester next year.

The EBU has offered to pay for four players to participate in a teams event between Commonwealth countries from July 15 to July 20, 2002. The offer to represent Australia will probably be made to the winning playoff team.

A common but often neglected safety play is to take what may appear as an unnecessary finesse.

In a Teams match how would you plan to make 3NT by South on the deal shown below? West leads the spade four and East plays the king.

You must win trick one with the ace, cross to dummy and lead the heart 10 ? intending to finesse if East ducks. If West wins you are protected from a spade attack.
